Villa Duynrade, The secret of Ameland
Ameland consists of four scenic villages: Nes, Buren, Hollum and Ballum. Each village has its own personality and a beach that stretches for kilometres.
Half of the island is a nature reserve. Here, you can enjoy riding a bicycle or taking a walk, and along the way encounter wild rabbits, Scottish highlanders or roe deer. The dunes and the beach are lovely places for you and your children to have a time to remember.
Do you prefer something other than cycling or walking? How about horse riding, mudflat hiking, archery, golf, kitesurfing, parachuting or kayaking the breaking waves? For the children, Ameland offers seal spotting, kiting, or climbing the lighthouse. Wonderful to do, and characteristic Ameland activities.
The picturesque village Nes is where you arrive on the ferry. It offers nice shops and terrace cafes. For a fun visit with the children, there are the nature centre full of Ameland animals and plants, and the corn mill De Phenix. Here, you can witness with your own eyes how the flour for the Amelander Mill bread is traditionally grounded.
The village Buren is close to Nes. Here, inside an eighteenth century farm, the Agriculture-Beachcomber museum is located, where you can see how the Ameland farmer lived around the turn of the century.
Hollum houses the lighthouse. It is open to the public and offers a beautiful view of the island. Ballum is the smallest village. Here, you will find cafe and restaurant Nobel, home to the world-famous Amelander Nobeltje: http://www.nobeltje.nl
The beach pavilions are opened all year round. Here you can enjoy the setting sun. For example at Beachclub The Sunset: http://www.thesunset.nl
